It's not just the scam mailers you need to look out for - it's not that hard to throw up a 'webpage' (esp. if people don't look at it too closely) or even to get into the 'bottom feeding' business. It pays to really look...
Highly questionable ‘businesses’: http://www.addressense.com/ (addressense@gmail.com): On August 17, 2008, this was posted on Paris Craigslist (http://paris.en.craigslist.org/apa/800376931.html):
BEWARE!!! Websites that offer NO CONTACT INFORMATION
Companies that REFUSE to SUPPLY REFERRALS
Businesses that insist on WIRE TRANSFERS to PERSONAL BANK ACCOUNTS in BULGARIA
If you think their prices are too low, it's because there IS NO APARTMENT!! ADDRESSENSE does not offer referrals, cannot provide you with additional photos of apartments (because they are a scam), they will not put you in contact with the person who is to "greet you in Paris" because there IS NO APARTMENT!!
Please be careful- do not trust ADDRESSENSE. This is a very well put together scam-
That didn't sound like fan mail to me so I went to look at their site (which I think is dodgy at best) ~ not a contact phone number or address in sight. Apparently everything is to be done by email.
Anyway, they state on their website that:
Addressense is on the market since 2007 but already we have many clients and the trust of more than 200 owners of apartments around the World. Now that's all well and good but when you go to
http://whois.domaintools.com/ and plug in their name this is what you find out:
Domain Name: ADDRESSENSE.COM
Registrant:Addressense
Diana Pentcheva
1 Jane Sandanski Str., Varna, Varna,9000, BG Tel. +359.885427531
Creation Date: 04-Mar-2008Expiration Date: 04-Mar-2009
So it would seem that they got around to registering that domain/company name a little later than they say and, if they are such a successful company, why are they relying on Gmail? And if they have made so many owners so darned happy, it really shouldn't be that hard for them to provide verifiable referrals for someone wanting to use their services, wouldn't you think?
Personally, I would tend to be just a bit more cautious around dealing with this company than say.... Hilton Hotels. Ya know?
In all fairness, this was posted 2008-08-19
http://paris.en.craigslist.org/apa/803656745.htmlHello! I hope everyone to read this! I am writing you because of this: (gives URL for above warning msg) My name is Andrea Timbaud and I am working in Addressense. As you can see - our agency has it's own absolutely individual paid website www.addressense.com There we are offering a large list of apartments of real owners. Many of you has been to our visits, even today - on August 19th in 75010. I want to ask how can someone publish here something without any proof? What kind of insinuation is this? I know what is the problem of this person but this is not the place to show his lack of culture. I believe that there is a scammer but I will leave it to all of you to find who is it! At this time it is better to use the service of an agency but I want to add that this service has it's price as agency fee. If you want to have a real apartment and so on, you have to pay to someone who will do his best with a professional tousch to make your stay a confort one. Also, I want to ask all of you - if you want to have good attitude - please give such. Please, stop asking for visits without going, please stop playing games, this is a serious deal and if you have nothing to do, please note that I have douzens of mails to answer to and many calls to make, so your scam allerts are just childish! In the end - help us make internet more secure place! Andrea Timbaud addressense@gmail.com www.addressense.com But, then again, there's
http://parishousingscamwatch.wordpress.com/2008/08/18/warning-beware-of-addressense/ and http://parishousingscamwatch.wordpress.com/the-truth-about-addressense/.
Do as you choose, but think it through well.
Canadarentalnetwork@gmail.com - It has been reported that they are ‘taking old postings from Craigslist - including the photos - and then posting them again at an incredible rent (example, one posting was previously listed for $2400, and is now listed at $1600). When you contact them to view the listing, they tell you that the condo is still available and then direct you to their web site where you have to pay at least $40 to enter.'
As per posting January 13, 2008 (
http://victoria.craigslist.ca/apa/538158346.html) on Craigslist:
I am the owner of the condo that is being discussed here, re: Stunning 2000 sq. ft. condo on Beacon Hill Park. Yes, you've basically got it right. They stole an old ad and reduced the price as a lure, etc. Ads expire after 45 days on craigslist and it never occured to me remove it after the apartment was rented. Who would scroll back that far? When I found out about this scam the other day I removed my old ad, and also contacted craigslist abuse, and they removed the scam ad. That's why both ads are now gone. Unfortunately, it is still listed on canadarentalnetwork.com, and my emails to them haven't changed that. Attempts to get them by phone have been futile. So to sum it up - THEY STOLE MY AD - I HAVE NO AGREEMENT WITH THEM - DON'T SIGN UP TO THEIR WEBSITEhttp://www.123apartments4u.com - this is an amateurish site with a Denver, Colorado phone number. They posted the same pictures with much the same ad in different cities though, if you followed the link to their ‘website’ the pictures they were using on Craigslist were apparently from a housing complex in Panama – very questionable. According to their site:
"Disclosure: Not all properties are available and the page above may depict an example. The information on this page is to be used as information only and our company and affiliates are not liable for accuracy."These are spam mails, literally infesting Craigslist housing ads. They slither under the spambot by inserting quotes which are 'ghosted' using HTML to neutralize the print colour so that it's nearly invisible ~ unless you're like me and looking for them. As well, there are now tons of 'ads' using

What we find: If you look at the +44 country code phone numbers listed in this blog, the next three numbers are usually 702, 703, 704... It's my understanding that it is a 'roaming' number that can be used from anywhere ~ I think someone said they are Skype numbers. If anyone can explain it more coherently, please do. Regardless, +44 (0) 702, +44 (0) 703, +44 (0) 704, etc... are not what you want to see in a phone number renting or buying on the internet.

What we find: Legitimate high end businesses and service providers with their own website do not, as a rule, use free public email addresses.

| Comments: | Our trip to London was terrific and the Mayfair apartment was wonderful. During past visits to London Nan had stayed in the Millennium Gloucester Motel just blocks away enjoying the accommodations and local culture and charm. However, on this trip we wanted a bit more room to spread out in and more atmosphere. The Mayfair provide these and more. We couldn't have been more pleased. It warrants a repeat visit. In fact, when we asked our 10 year-old daughter how she would rate this trip she replied without hesitation - "this trip was better than Disney World or Hawaii." Thank you Lettings City for making this a vacation to remember. |
What we find: Google nacytera@rocketmail.com and you find nanny scams with nary a 10 year old daughter in sight.
