What do I have against Western Union?

Well.... Nothing actually. They essentially do what they are supposed to - they move money from here to there. The fact that they take no responsibility in any of the end results is no real surprise but I doubt if there is anywhere where they promise to hold your hand and help you sidestep those big nasty scammers - I suspect they figure that you've done your homework.

Which is about the size of it really - who you choose to send your money to is not their business.

On their site (http://www.westernunion.com/), they offer this advice:

Remember:

• The Western Union Money Transfer service is a great way to send money to people you know and trust.
  
• It isn't intended to send money to someone you don't know.
  
• Western Union doesn't provide an escrow service and isn't responsible for the quality or non-receipt of any goods or services.
  
• Sending money using a fictitious receiver name won't protect you when doing business with a stranger. Don't do it.
  
• Where available, the "Test Question" feature is designed for emergency situations where the receiver will not have proper identification. It should never be used as additional security to time or delay payment of a transaction.
  
• With few exceptions, Money Transfer Control Numbers (MTCNs) are not required to pick up money. If someone tells you differently, check with Western Union directly.
  
• If an offer sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

Which is all well and good but, from the following, perhaps Western Union oughta tighten things up just a smidge in how they do business, eh?

(I know this is mostly aimed at people purchasing something but I thought some of the information helped explain how some of it works in points 3 and 4.)

This scam is becoming one of the most common scams used by scammers. Essentially, a Western Union scam is any scam that takes place using the Western Union method of payment.

Most commonly, there is a situation where a buyer pays for something via Western Union, and then never receives what was paid for; or the buyer pays for an item via Western Union, and then receives an item of a value far lower than what was actually paid for.

Please note this scam takes a various number of forms for a wide variety of items. Just because it does not match exactly your transaction or potential transaction, does not mean it is not the same scam.

In other words, avoid any scams the resembling the following situation:

1. Buyer finds an item at a price far lower that what would actually be paid for that item.

2. Buyer shows interest in the item, thinks the deal is too good to pass up, and asks for more information on how to complete the transaction. The scammer knows the victim is already interested.

3. The seller tells the buyer to send the money via Western Union, the seller then asks for the Western Union MTCN # or the money transfer number (this is basically a number that gives the thief access the money).

4. Once the thief has the MTCN or money transfer number, he/she can pick up the money at any Western Union worldwide and disappear. The buyer has paid, but the item that was paid for will never be sent.

And lastly, just to give that dead horse one more good flogging, Craigslist posts:

Someone requests wire service payment via Western Union or MoneyGram:

• Scam "bait" items include apartments, laptops, plasma TVs, cell phones, tickets - but could be almost anything
• Often claim that an MTCN or confirmation code is needed before he can withdraw your money - this is FALSE, once you've wired money, it is GONE.
• Common countries currently include: Nigeria, Romania, United Kingdom, Ukraine, Spain, Italy, Netherlands - but could be anywhere.
• Apartment listing may be local, but landlord/owner is "travelling" or "relocating" and needs you to wire money to them abroad.
• Deal often seems too good to be true, price is too low, rent is below market, etc.

(1) Generally, as a rule of thumb, if the address is as prominent in the header as it is with the ones in this post, it's a good idea to start sniffing around. I find most of the time, unless it's an established real estate company, it's how 'they' identify their ads.

(2) If the name begins with Reverend or Pastor, I would suggest developing the same knee jerk reaction that I recommended on hearing 'West Africa' (i.e - Nigeria, Cote D'Ivoire, Ghana, etc...)

(3) As far as I can figger it, West Africa is knee deep in crusaders and missionaries - who in gawd's name is left to convert?

(4) I prefer people show me that they are kind and honest folks. If they have to tell me, I relegate it to the same category as 'the cheque is in the mail' - I'll believe it when I see it.

(5) Hot water 'independency'? Webster's defines the word as: an independent political unit. Does that mean that the apartment comes with politicians embroiled in a scandal or something?

(6) A 'lift' is British for 'elevator' in case you didn't know. I guess they're reaping their ad material from foreign realty sites. (It's one of those little word clues that lets you know that things may not be quite right.)

(7) One of the links under 'Useful Things To Know' will lead you to a web page with links to each province's Residential Tenancy Act. Assuming this were actually a real application, which questions are illegal? How much is your landlord allowed to ask for a security deposit?

(1) Seeing 'West Africa' anything in emails where any money or personal details are at stake should immediately give you a nervous twitch.

(2) If you have a look at the Scammers In Your Neighbourhood list, you'll see that Mr. Berger is one of the popular employers to be working for there. Betcha anything, he'd be some surprised to find our fella working for him though.

(3) Trust me - this is the equivalent of 'the cheque is in the mail'! And said keys and documents will only be couriered to you once you have sent them whatever $$ they are asking for (you do believe that, don't you?)- via Western Union, of course. (Wouldn't want your hard earned rent dollars to be traceable while they are being siphoned into a black hole, would we?)

(4) If they have the address so prominently displayed in their response, it's generally a good indication that they have so many scam ads out that they have to label 'em to track 'em. (I had a merry round of exchanges with someone who hadn't identified their ads and couldn't for the life of them figure out which address I was referring to in my questions - I was no help whatsoever.)

(5) Dunno about you, but in almost forty years of renting, I've never had any landlord assure me that my apartment came with a sewer hookup. (Do you think maybe it's just a cut and paste job from a real estate ad?)

(6) If there are any other genders to be declared, somehow I seem to have overlooked them but ok.... As long as they're flexible... (Yah - I'm nitpicking.)

It's a matter of taste...

I can't resist adding this picture (and my apologies to the original photographer who I would cheerfully acknowledge if I knew where the photo was from). This was one of a series of pictures one scamlord sent to illustrate the '$900 / 3br - Spancious Three Bedrooms Flat For Rent' that I had sent an inquiry about.

(I don't always trust my judgement about picking out scam ads, ya know... I really do try to do some homework - trouble is, I'm usually right)

Besides, I had all kinds of curiosity as to what a 'spancious' flat might be - perhaps a cross between spacious and expansive? Or something along that line? I will admit some of the other pics were ummmmm... bold in their decorating but this is the pic that stopped me cold. If the ad had been real, this kitchen alone would have queered the deal.

I had been visually stricken by some of the artwork the designer had picked for the suite but running into the Green Monster had me reeling in pain from my computer screen, screaming, 'My eyes! My eyes!' leaving me in such a state that I had to sneak up on the computer and sort of nudge the mouse to shift it out of view. (Okay - I'm overdoing it but I think I was badly traumatized by a legume or two in my childhood.)

Gads! It's like living in the inside of a pea and I loathe peas!

And that fake blond wood! Ick! Hardly the image of gracious living I would be seducing my victims with...

Ugly! Just plain ugly. (You may love it - feel free!) And what scares the hell outta me sometimes is that, in cruising through rent ads, there's more than one place that features lime green as a predominant colour.

Did I miss something in the take-no-prisoners fashion revolution? Overwhelming bright green as an accent colour, mebbe, but to enfold yourself in it? It would be like waking up and finding yourself encased in lime jello aspic.

*Shudder!*

And that's my fashion critique for the day.

Things to remember...

This is not an exhaustive list - it's things I thought of but I know there's probably more and, if you send it to me and it makes sense, I will be very glad to add it.

The following is mostly common sense but it helps as a reminder that sometimes it's easy to overlook the little things:

Remember:

1. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

2. Know your market.

3. DO NOT wire rent or deposit money anywhere no matter how they go on about having problems with their bank accounts, yada yada...

4. Do not fall for the 'keys in the mail' gambit.

5. Do not fall for the con of 'you can't see the apt. before renting' or 'just go look at the outside'. This is a quote from one of their replies, just for an example:

'Firstly,i will like you to go take a look at the exterior part of the house because you will not be able to go inside to see the interior hence i have all the keys and security code here with me.you can get back to me if you are truely interested.'

6. Share info about scammers - not likely they'll disappear, but it would be nice to make it harder for them to operate.

7. The chronic line is that they are busy crusading in West Africa, working abroad, taken ill while visiting in the States, but they are god fearing and honest folks and they know you will just trust them - riiiiight! You get the picture.

8. Never get maneuvered into a position where you are cashing cheques or money orders for them and sending them the balance.

9. DO NOT GIVE OUT PERSONAL INFORMATION SUCH AS SIN, BANK INFORMATION, ETC.,. UNTIL YOU HAVE SEEN THE APT. AND HAVE SATISFIED YOURSELF THAT IT IS A LEGITIMATE TRANSACTION. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO GIVE YOUR SIN TO ANYONE OTHER THAN AN EMPLOYER, BANK OR FEDERAL GOVERNMENT!!

10. Just because they say they work for ‘ABC Rental Corp.’ or any other real estate/rental agency doesn't mean they do. I've seen a well known agency's name used and know that it was absolutely not their style of ad. Do your homework - ask questions; verify information.

11. Does the person in a hurry to transfer his lease (leaving you all the wonderful furniture, electronics, etc.. cuz he's such a nice guy) actually have the right to sublet? (Is he even a tenant?). Have you seen the original lease? Talked to the actual landlord especially since they are almost guaranteeing you the landlord is such a fantastic guy that the lease will be automatically renewed? How come they're so wonderful that they are willing to subsidize your rent for the balance of the lease?

12. Be careful and be safe.

That didn't sound like fan mail to me so I went to look at their site (which I think is dodgy at best) ~ not a contact phone number or address in sight. Apparently everything is to be done by email.

When you contact them to view the listing, they tell you that the condo is still available and then direct you to their web site where you have to pay at least $40 to enter.'

As per posting January 13, 2008 (http://victoria.craigslist.ca/apa/538158346.html) on Craigslist: I am the owner of the condo that is being discussed here, re: Stunning 2000 sq. ft. condo on Beacon Hill Park. Yes, you've basically got it right. They stole an old ad and reduced the price as a lure, etc. Ads expire after 45 days on craigslist and it never occured to me remove it after the apartment was rented. Who would scroll back that far? When I found out about this scam the other day I removed my old ad, and also contacted craigslist abuse, and they removed the scam ad. That's why both ads are now gone. Unfortunately, it is still listed on canadarentalnetwork.com, and my emails to them haven't changed that. Attempts to get them by phone have been futile. So to sum it up - THEY STOLE MY AD - I HAVE NO AGREEMENT WITH THEM - DON'T SIGN UP TO THEIR WEBSITE

http://www.123apartments4u.com - this is an amateurish site with a Denver, Colorado phone number. They posted the same pictures with much the same ad in different cities though, if you followed the link to their ‘website’ the pictures they were using on Craigslist were apparently from a housing complex in Panama – very questionable. According to their site:

"Disclosure: Not all properties are available and the page above may depict an example. The information on this page is to be used as information only and our company and affiliates are not liable for accuracy."

These are spam mails, literally infesting Craigslist housing ads. They slither under the spambot by inserting quotes which are 'ghosted' using HTML to neutralize the print colour so that it's nearly invisible ~ unless you're like me and looking for them. As well, there are now tons of 'ads' using http://www.shrunkin.com/ ~ feel free to flag 'em for the scam spam they are.
